Daryl Hall granted a restraining order against John Oates
Music Duo's Legal Battle Escalates
In a surprising turn of events, Daryl Hall has been granted a temporary restraining order against his former music partner, John Oates. The order, which was issued by a Nashville court on Friday, November 18, 2023, prohibits Oates from contacting or approaching Hall in person or electronically.
The details of the dispute between the two musicians remain unclear, as the case is sealed. However, according to online court records, Hall filed a lawsuit against Oates in Chancery Court in Nashville on Thursday, November 17, 2023. The suit is reportedly related to a "contract/debt" dispute.
Hall's attorney has declined to comment on the case, and representatives for Oates have not responded to requests for comment.
The restraining order comes amid a growing rift between Hall and Oates, who have been performing together for over 40 years. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Hall expressed his frustration with the duo's working relationship, saying that it is "very annoying to be a duo."
"John and I are brothers, right? We're not creative brothers," Hall told the Times. "We're business partners. We've always been very separate. And it's a very important thing for me. I won't go any farther."
The tension between Hall and Oates reached a boiling point earlier this year when Oates released a reggae version of their 1982 hit song "Maneater" without Hall's input. Hall was reportedly upset that Oates did not consult him about the project.
"I didn't think it was very cool," Hall told Bill Maher on his HBO show Club Random. "I didn't think it was very professional. I think he should have at least given me a heads-up."
Despite their differences, Hall and Oates have said that they are committed to continuing to perform together. However, it remains to be seen whether their partnership can survive this latest legal battle.
